There’s something so important, so profound about fully living out our God-given craft. When we create, we are tapping into the life force of the Creator, and reflecting his character. To be at one with our creativity and our Creator is to fulfill the call of Genesis, which is to partner with God in human flourishing.
However, as much as we have been gifted with talents, abilities, and ways in which to see the world, there is also a potential to corrupt these gifts into something selfish and not of God. When we seek our own glory, our own praise, and prioritize recognition from human eyes, that creative energy and craft produced is poisoned by our own prideful aspirations. To steal the glory from God and place it upon ourselves is to leave the Garden place of creativity which in turn separates us from the Creator. To claim that our creative works are the result of our merit alone is to rebel against God, thinking that we know better, as were the sins of Adam and Eve. When we seek our own gain, we attempt to rob God of his rightful glory. Additionally, we cannot seek to make a god out of what we create, as all of our efforts pale in comparison to the person of Jesus Christ, his living Spirit, and the way he has created the world.
To truly flourish in creativity is to be at one with, to abide in, and to operate out of the love of the Creator and give him the glory for our craft.
Too often we forget that we are all a part of Creation, made in the image of God. Much of our identity can be shaped around our perspective on who God is and what it means to be made in his image. We have been created by the very Words of God, poured out from his lips and formed in his hands. You are the spoken word poetry of God. As you have been created, with purpose, love, and intent to flourish, so you are to create. You are a reflection of the Creator and made in his likeness. Operate out of love and Christ’s creativity.
Let your craft bring praise to the Creator, and through that humble surrender, let the work of your hands, heart, and mind be transformed into even greater beauty.
